Anton Raphael Mengs was a German artist who achieved great renown in his day for his classical painting and portraits of European royalty. Born in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic, Mengs came from an artistic family and was trained by his father, Ismael Mengs, a court painter in Dresden.
Mengs spent much of his early career in Italy, where he became deeply influenced by the classical style of painting and sculpture. He spent time in Rome and Florence, studying the works of Raphael, Michelangelo, and other masters of the Italian Renaissance.
In 1755, Mengs was appointed court painter to the king of Spain, and he spent the rest of his career working in Madrid. He was highly regarded by the Spanish royal family, and he produced numerous portraits of King Charles III, his wife Maria Amalia of Saxony, and other members of the court. He also worked on religious paintings and frescoes for various churches and chapels in Spain.
