Memling was probably trained in the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden, a well-known Flemish painter, before he established his own studio in Bruges. He specialized in creating altarpieces, portraits, and religious scenes for private patrons and religious institutions. His art features elongated figures with delicate facial expressions, and his exceptional skill in depicting the textures of fabrics, jewelry, and other decorative elements.

Memling was a master of creating intricate landscapes and cityscapes that added depth and context to his paintings. Some of his most famous works include the Portinari Altarpiece commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, an Italian banker, and the St. John Altarpiece commissioned by the Hospital of St. John in Bruges. These works feature complex compositions of multiple scenes and figures from religious texts.

Memling's work had a profound influence on later artists, such as Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein the Younger, and his legacy lives on today through his exquisite, emotionally resonant paintings. He died in Bruges in 1494, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy that continues to captivate viewers.
