Scharnhorst was born in Bordenau, in the Electorate of Hanover, in 1755. He joined the Prussian army as a young man and served in the Seven Years' War and the War of the Bavarian Succession. He rose through the ranks and became a lieutenant colonel in 1792.

In 1806, during the Napoleonic Wars, Prussia suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Napoleon's armies. Scharnhorst was among the Prussian officers who recognized the need for radical reform of the army. He became a key figure in the movement for military reform and was appointed chief of the newly created General Staff in 1808.

As chief of the General Staff, Scharnhorst implemented reforms that transformed the Prussian army. He abolished the traditional system of promotion based on noble birth and introduced promotion based on merit and skill. He also introduced new training methods, improved logistics, and reorganized the army into smaller, more mobile units.

Scharnhorst also played a key role in the development of the Landwehr, a reserve force of citizen soldiers that could be called up in times of war. This was a major departure from the traditional system of relying solely on professional soldiers.

Scharnhorst's reforms were put to the test during the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon's armies. He was a key advisor to the Prussian king, Frederick William III, and played a key role in the decisive victory at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. However, Scharnhorst was mortally wounded in the battle and died shortly afterward.

Scharnhorst's reforms had a lasting influence on the development of modern warfare. His emphasis on merit-based promotion and citizen soldiers helped to create a more professional and effective army, while his emphasis on logistics and mobility paved the way for modern military tactics. He is remembered as a hero of Prussian and German military history and is widely regarded as one of the major military reformers of his era.
