Johann Nepomuk Schaller was an Austrian sculptor known for his bust of Ludwig van Beethoven, commissioned by the composer's secretary in 1825 and later presented to the Royal Philharmonic Society, London. Schaller studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and apprenticed at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. He later became the head of modelling at the factory and remained an artistic advisor there throughout his life.
He lived in Rome from 1812 to 1823 on a grant from Prince Metternich, where he connected with the Nazarene movement and artists like Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen. He declined an offer to work for King Ludwig I in Munich, however did produce the bust of Wilhelm III. von Oranien for Walhalla.. Upon his return to Vienna, he became a Professor of Sculpture at the Academy, where his most famous student was Joseph Gasser von Valhorn. He died after a brief illness, and a street in Vienna was named after him in 1907.
