Johannes Scholl

Born in Bremen in 1805, Johannes Scholl studied under his uncle, Johann Baptist Scholl the Elder, and Konrad Eberhard in Munich. After his training, Scholl moved to Rome in 1834, where he worked as an assistant to Ludwig von Schwanthaler. Starting in 1840, he collaborated with Bertel Thorvaldsen, a partnership that later led him to Copenhagen in the same year. During his time in Rome, Scholl, working in the classicist spirit of his teacher Thorvaldsen, produced the bust of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn for Walhalla in the years leading up to the monument's opening.
